There are several types of health care providers that do not get to deliver their services unless a doctor or other authorized provider signs off on those services (e.g. Medicare Certified Home Health, Physical Therapy Marketing, etc.). Unlike normal “main street” businesses, these health care providers often find themselves marketing to referral sources. This, plus the additional variable of third-party-payors, adds an unusual complexity that most businesses do not face in their marketing efforts. The recipients of the services cannot order the service and neither the person ordering the service nor the person receiving the service pays for the service. However, any of these three parties can refuse the services. The doctor ordering the services has a very different perspective on the services compared to the person receiving the services, but both of their information needs must be met.
Some standard marketing advice simply does not apply in referral-based health care marketing. Some practices common to “main street” are illegal in health care marketing, and some traditional marketing approaches require modification before they will work in referral-based health care marketing.
